Modern Warships Game Modes Guide
Team Battle, Escort, Deathmatch, and Clan Wars — pick the right queue for rewards and practice.
Modern Warships is more than one queue. Team Battle teaches core PvP, Escort rewards event Tokens and cargo control, Team Deathmatch accelerates kill-focused grinding, and Clan Wars demand coordinated rosters. Seasonal events such as Depths of Despair (July 2026) and older Alliance Clash rotations explicitly route Token farms through Escort, Deathmatch, and Clan Wars — so understanding mode rules saves hours of inefficient matchmaking.
This guide maps every major mode captains meet after the June 2026 Steam launch and through Update 0.107 Virtual Worlds. Pair it with How to Play for objective basics and Maps wiki for terrain habits. The Escort gameplay video above shows how cargo fights feel under missile pressure — use it as a visual primer before ranked Escort events.
Team Battle — the default 5v5
Team Battle is the foundation of Modern Warships combat: classic 5v5 matches lasting about ten minutes. Win by eliminating the enemy team or securing the score/objective advantage before the timer. You can queue solo or with a squad.
What Team Battle trains:
- Role coverage — destroyers spot and strike, frigates hold AA, cruisers/battleships anchor, carriers and subs create asymmetric pressure. See Ship Classes.
- Cap and map control — island routes on remasters like Viking Bay (0.106 visual overhaul) still use familiar choke points.
- Loadout validation — the safest place to test Missile Builds and Stealth Detection habits after 0.107.
When to queue Team Battle: daily missions, ranked climb, and learning a new hull such as USS Defiant or FGS Tirpitz.
Escort — cargo delivery vs interception
Escort revolves around a strategic cargo that moves along a fixed route. One side delivers the cargo to port; the other destroys it. Checkpoints along the path shift respawn points for the escort team and award points when passed. Interceptors score by destroying cargo.
Official Escort rules (from seasonal event pages):
- Maps often include Arid Frontier, Two Samurai, Monstrous Malström, Greenlands, Lost City, and Arctic (rotation varies by event).
- Escort wins by completing the delivery mission; interceptors win by destroying cargo.
- Events frequently add Token multipliers on first daily Escort battles — critical for Battle Pass and event stages.
Escort ship picks:
- Escort side — durable cruisers/battleships, strong AA against air strikes, ASW against subs that hunt the convoy.
- Intercept side — high-alpha missile destroyers, stealth approaches using 0.107 neutral minimap circles, and carriers that spot the cargo early.
Watch the Escort video above for nuke-cruiser pressure examples, then adapt with Advanced Consumables smoke and radar bursts near checkpoints.
Team Deathmatch — kill-focused grinding
Team Deathmatch (often labeled Team Death Match in events) emphasizes eliminations over cargo. Events such as Depths of Despair and Planetary Siege list it alongside Escort for Token farming. Expect faster respawn loops and less objective babysitting.
Best uses:
- Farming Battle Pass stage XP when daily Escort queues are long.
- Testing flare bait from Missile and Flare Tactics without cargo pathing stress.
- Aggressive destroyer practice before switching to Team Battle ranked.
Avoid treating Deathmatch habits as ranked gospel — overextenders get punished harder when caps matter.
Clan Wars — scheduled team competition
Clan Wars are structured clan-versus-clan battles with season points and prestige rewards. Officers field fixed rosters; voice coordination and synchronized missile volleys matter more than solo DPS. Full walkthrough: Clan Wars guide.
Events often accept Clan Wars matches for Token progress — useful if your clan already schedules war nights during an event window.
Custom rooms and training
Custom / private rooms let friends test loadouts, obstacle-lock missiles from 0.107, and new hulls without ranked MMR risk. Update 0.106 also added a carrier training mission with on-screen tips and a first-clear reward — use it before maining Carrier Tier List ships.
How events pick modes (July–August 2026 pattern)
Recent official events share a template:
- Play Escort, Team Deathmatch, and/or Clan Wars.
- Earn special points and Tokens for event stages.
- Optional first-10-battles daily multipliers.
- Authorization Keys and Classified Cargo loops for bonus rewards.
Depths of Despair (July 9–31, 2026) followed this pattern and paired with Twitch Drops. August Virtual Worlds focuses more on Battle Pass Credits shop progression — see Battle Pass Guide — but future mid-season events will likely reuse Escort/TDM queues.

Cross-system tips after 0.107
- Stealth circles appear in every PvP mode — Escort interceptors especially abuse island approaches. Read Stealth Detection.
- RNG-free upgrades mean you can finish a mode-specific loadout without gambling Credit burns — Ship Upgrades.
- Inventory 500 still overflows during event key dumps — clean before mass claims — Inventory wiki.
- Ping abuse fix applies across modes; delayed spike damage no longer counts.
Common mistakes
- Queueing Escort with a glass missile DD on the escort side — cargo needs tanks and AA.
- Ignoring checkpoint respawn shifts — dying early forces long runs back to the cargo.
- Farming Deathmatch only, then wondering why ranked caps feel foreign.
- Skipping Clan Wars scheduling and joining mid-season with an incomplete roster.
